We are an over thirty year old organization dedicated to helping writers of all genres and abilities enhance their skills, network with others, and succeed in following their dreams as authors. We have members who write memoirs, historical fiction, poetry, personal essays, literary fiction, sci-fi/fantasy, non-fiction, romance…the list goes on. All are welcome. You can learn more about ABOUT US.
Our goal is to join with and aid writers seeking to strengthen their skill set, either with the craft itself, or with the business of writing, or both. We welcome all writers from all walks and styles. All we ask is that you bring your desire to write, a kind heart, and a willingness to a have a good time learning and sharing with others as careers blossom and grow. We enjoy spending time with other writers who like to work together, to make good things happen.

EVENTS Update:
In-Person Monthly Meetings Are Back!!!
These meetings are planned for the fourth Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm at the Freeman Memorial Library hosted by Kate Sanger. See Events for details of each meeting and to register to attend.
In April, 2025, we will have BAWL officer elections for President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. We have one candidate for President, Kate Sanger who has provided the following bio:
Howdy! I’d like to announce my run for President of BAWL. My name is Kate Sanger, and I was first a member of BAWL back in 2004, taking on positions including membership chair, newsletter editor, coordinator for monthly mini-workshops, and even President for two years. While I was forced to take time off for medical issues, I’ve found BAWL again and would love to return it to its heyday, before COVID shut down in-person events and derailed plans. At this point, I’ve helped to start a twice-monthly critique group and monthly speaker meetings. I also plan on helping with the yearly anthologies, and I’d love to start quarterly workshops. I would love to once again help BAWL achieve its goal: to join with and aid writers seeking to strengthen their skill set, either with the craft itself, or with the business of writing, or both.
As a reminder, only paid BAWL members can vote.
Write-Ins Our write-ins occur every Monday and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am, hosted by Becky Ellisor via Zoom. We also hold a once-per-month event on the third Saturday at 3:00 pm for two hours hosted by Julie Pitzel, both in-person and via Zoom. Our method instills a sense of commitment to writing, providing a gentle push to get started. We value camaraderie and foster a welcoming environment where participants are not obligated to share their work. While there are no strict rules, we avoid political discussions to maintain a friendly ambiance.
After three attendances, we require membership in the Houston Bay Area Writers League. It's only $30 a year. (We can help if you need it. Just ask.) Go to our EVENTS page register for the Zoom link, and write with us.
Critique Group - BAWL has an in-person Critique Group where writers gather regularly to examine and discuss each other’s work. Kate Sangar and Kim Glaus Late host these twice-per-month sessions. Sign-up via the Events page.
Anthology Update: No anthology is planned for 2025. Stay Tuned!
