Hello, Writers,
By now, you should have received a special email announcing the return of the BAWL monthly meetings, which will feature a speaker. As you may recall, these in-person events were well attended before COVID-19 shut them down.
Last year, we had many speaker events, which were starting to gain momentum by the final one in October. That has encouraged BAWL volunteer Kate Sanger to find great speakers for the revived monthly BAWL in-person meetings. Thank you, Kate!
The meetings, by necessity, have changed to the fourth Wednesday of every month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at the Freeman Memorial Library. The speaker on February 26 will be Doug Williams, an award-winning screenwriter, author, and playwright.
Doug Williams's script Black Star Rising, based on the life of Houstonian Barbara Jordan, one of the most prominent African-American political figures in the latter 20th century, has been honored in 40 film festivals, winning eight best screenplay awards for a short film he wrote and produced,
A Bullet For Your Thoughts has been similarly recognized, winning awards for best film, best noir, best thriller, best mystery, best actor, and best supporting actor and actress. His latest, a female-based thriller titled The Kronos Protocol, has also won numerous competitions, earning praise for both the writing and the story.
Critics compared his novel Nowhere Man to Homeland and House of Cards, and he co-wrote A Sacred Duty, the true story of a federal whistleblower who helped expose a conspiracy and cover-up that killed hundreds of American veterans.
Mr. Williams will discuss how screenwriting informs novel writing and vice versa– structure, themes, chapter transitions, and pacing.
Let's show Doug Williams how much BAWL loves and supports this event!
This week, our feature is a love poem by BAWL member and write-in attendee Martha Cuddihy. Thank you, Martha, for sharing the love! Submitting a poem, a work of fiction, or an essay is open to all BAWL members. We want to hear from you! Submitted works are posted and promoted on the BAWL website and the BAWL Substack.
A reminder that the Saturday Afternoon Write-In is tomorrow! The 3rd Saturday of each month event is hosted by Julie Pitzel both online (register via Events) and in-person at Friendswood Library, 416 S. Friendswood Dr., 77546. Julie prefers to communication via Facebook. Use the BAWL Facebook link below if you have any questions.
Hey, you photographers out there: Have you taken a thought provoking photo lately? Send it to editorbawl@gmail.com so we can use it as the Writing Prompt Image of the Month. You keep all rights to your image. We just put it down below for all recipients of the newsletter to see.
One last item. A BAWL member suggested this article could be of value to members. Publishing models: out with the old, in with the older. Suggestions like this are welcomed, we are always happy to share.
Be kind to one another, and keep writing!
